10.2 Bachelor of Arts

10.2.0 Educational Objectives: Faculty of Arts

The Departments of Fine Arts, Literature and Language, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Psychology, and Social Sciences have designed for you a high-quality educational experience to help you attain the following objectives:

  1. To discover, from scientific, theological, humanistic, and creative perspectives, insights from past and present into what it means to be human.
  2. To develop methods of thought and inquiry that will lay the foundation of your future knowledge and wisdom.
  3. To learn to read and to listen critically, to write persuasively, and to communicate with a confidence born of knowledge.
  4. To train in the latest methods of research and digital literacy appropriate to each area of study.
  5. To perceive and foster connections among your areas of study, the Christian tradition, and the wider world around you.
  6. To identify with Concordia University of Edmonton’s aim of developing “independent thinkers, ethical leaders, reflective servants in their occupations, and citizens for the common good.”
  7. To create the basis of your future academic, professional, or vocational career, enabling you to “learn for life.”

10.2.1 Four-Year Bachelor of Arts Degree Programs

A. General Academic Requirements

Candidates for Concordia University of Edmonton’s four-year Bachelor of Arts programs:

  1. Must complete a total of 120 credits.
  2. Must complete a core requirement of 33 credits minimum—consisting of the core requirements and 3 additional credits of Fine Arts (ARTH, DAN, DRA, MUS, or, MUP). See Core Requirements, section 10.1.
  3. Must complete 36-60 credits in a major , or complete a General Studies major.
  4. Except for the General Studies major, must complete at least 18 credits in a minor, of which 6 credits must be at the senior-level; alternatively, a second major is permissible.
  5. May take only 6 credits of junior-level English and 6 credits of junior-level Religious Studies.
  6. May take no more than 48 credits of junior-level courses for credit toward a degree.
  7. May include core course requirements in the major and minor. However, the same course may not be counted toward both the major and minor requirements.
  8. Must complete 60 of the 120 credits required to graduate at Concordia University of Edmonton. Moreover, at least 18 credits of the last 30 credits must be completed at Concordia University of Edmonton (Residency Requirement, section B).
  9. May take no more than 72 credits in any one discipline; however, only 42 credits are permitted in any discipline of a concentration of the General Studies major.
  10. Must take a minimum of 102 credits in Arts and Science courses, of which a minimum of 66 credits must be Arts.
  11. For continuation in the four-year English, Music, Religious Studies, and Sociology degree program, must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 or higher, and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in the major. For the four-year General Studies degree program, must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0. Students in the applied emphasis program in Psychology should consult the program and GPA requirements in section C, item 5.
    Students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirements to continue in the four-year BA should consult with a Registration Advisor regarding the three-year BA degree program.
  12. For graduation, must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 in the 120 credits applicable to the degree, and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in the courses in the major. For further information, see Graduation Requirements, section 9.7.1.
    Candidates who do not meet the minimum GPA requirements for the four-year BA should consult a Registration Advisor regarding the three-year BA degree.
  13. Must present credit in a 30-level Language Other than English or one of ARAB 102, [Approved by the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Arts on March 2, 2017] CHIN 102, FR 102, GERM 102, GRK 102, HEBR 102, LAT 102, or SPA 102.

B. Residency Requirement

Candidates for Concordia University of Edmonton’s four-year Bachelor of Arts degree must complete the specified credits at Concordia University of Edmonton (section A.8). Students who plan to take courses at other institutions must first follow the procedures for Visiting Student Permission, section 4.4.3.A.

C. Major Requirements

1. English

42-60 credits required, to include:

  1. 6 credits of junior-level English
  2. 6 credits chosen from ENG 323, 324, 330, 331, 338, 339
  3. 6 credits chosen from ENG 341, 342, 343, 350, 354, 356
  4. One of ENG 365, 366, or 367
  5. One of ENG 381, 382, 383, or 384
  6. One of ENG 392, 393, 394, or 395
  7. One of WRI 300, WRI 310, WRI 391, WRI 392
  8. 3 credits from the ENG 401-425 series or from ENG 480
  9. ENG 491 or 492
  10. 6-24 credits of unspecified senior-level ENG or WRI courses
2. General Studies

This multidisciplinary program allows students to gain understanding and experience in more than one discipline without the requirement that the learning be integrated. Students would be able to select two concentrations for study, customizing their course selections to meet their own interests and career aspirations.

Students for the four-year Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in General Studies:

  1. must complete 2 concentrations from Concentration Requirements, section 10.2.2.C.
  2. may include core requirements in the concentrations; however, the same courses may not be used in both concentrations.
3. Music

45-60 credits required, to include:

Performance: 9 credits
  1. MUP 126 and 127
  2. 3 credits chosen from MUP 142 and 143, 162 and 163, 164 and 165, 166 and 167, or 168 and 169
  3. 3 credits chosen from MUP 226 and 227, 242 and 243, 262 and 263, 264 and 265, 266 and 267, or 268 and 269
Theory and Composition: 12 credits
  1. MUS 211 and 212 (Note: In order to be successful in all areas of the degree, it is recommended that students take MUS 211 by their third year.)
  2. MUS 213 and 214
  3. 3 credits chosen from MUS 311, 312, 315, 316, or 313 and 314
History and Literature: 6 credits
  1. 6 credits chosen from MUS 261, 262, 263, 281, 282, or 380-series
Conducting and Pedagogy: 3 credits
  1. 3 credits chosen from MUS 295, 321, 361 or MUED 213, 214 or from the MUS 370-series
Capstone: 3 credits

Senior Project/Recital: 3 credits

  2. 0-6 credits junior- or senior-level Music courses (Note: Students may be required to take MUS 100 and/or MUS 120 depending on their level of proficiency in music theory.)

Students with a major in Music must complete a minimum of 12 credits of Music at Concordia University of Edmonton.

 

4. Psychology

42-60 credits required, to include:

  1. PSY 104 and 105
  2. PSY 211 or equivalent with a minimum grade of C- (MAT 151 and SOC 210 are acceptable equivalents).
    The Psychology Department strongly recommends PSY 211.
  3. PSY 311
  4. PSY 319
  5. 12 credits chosen from PSY 223, 281, 338, 341, 351, or 358; or 12 credits chosen from PSY 281, 324, 338, 341, 351, or 358.
  6. 6 credits chosen from PSY 334, 339, 350, 359, 385, or 399
  7. One of PSY 275, 367, or 477
  8. One of PSY 420, 421, 431, or 435
  9. One of PSY 405, 480 or 481
  10. 0-18 credits of unspecified senior-level Psychology courses

WRI 300 is strongly recommended.

 

5. Psychology (Applied Emphasis)

Students must apply for admission to the third year of this program. Specific admission requirements are published in section 3.3.

For continuation to the fourth year of the Basic Program, students must pass PSY 486, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the 90 credits applicable to the degree, and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in Psychology credits. For continuation to the fourth year of the Enhanced Program, students must pass PSY 486, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the 90 credits applicable to the degree and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in Psychology credits, have a current security clearance, and receive consent of the Psychology department.

Basic Program: 42-60 credits required, to include:

  1. PSY 104 and 105
  2. PSY 211 or equivalent with a minimum grade of C- (MAT 151 and SOC 210 are acceptable equivalents). The Psychology Department strongly recommends PSY 211.
  3. PSY 275
  4. PSY 311 and 319

PSY 433, PSY 434, PSY 435, and WRI 300 are strongly recommended.

 

 

 

Enhanced Program: 54-60 credits required, to include:

6. Religious Studies

36-60 credits required, to include:

  1. REL 101 and 102
  2. REL 248, 252, 253, and 373
  3. One of REL 320, 321, 322, 323, or 331
  4. One of REL 362, 364, 365, 367, or 382
  5. One of REL 359, 375, or 376
  6. REL 499
  7. 6-30 credits of unspecified senior-level Religious Studies courses

PHIL 290 is strongly recommended.

Students are strongly advised to take at least six credits of a Language Other than English which relates to their major interest (e.g., Hebrew or Greek in Biblical studies; German, Latin or French in Reformation studies).

 

7. Sociology

The four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology enables students to study a substantive area of interest in greater depth.

42-60 credits required, to include:

  1. SOC 100
  2. SOC 101 or 102
  3. SOC 210 (MAT 151 and PSY 211 are acceptable equivalents) and 315
  4. SOC 332 and 333
  5. 6 credits chosen from SOC 224, 241, 260, or 261
  6. 12 credits of unspecified senior-level Sociology courses
  7. SOC 405
  8. 3 credits chosen from SOC 471, 475, or 480
  9. 0-18 credits of unspecified Sociology courses with a maximum of 3 credits at the junior-level

10.2.2 Three-Year Bachelor of Arts Degree Programs

A. General Academic Requirements

Candidates for Concordia University of Edmonton’s three-year Bachelor of Arts programs:

  1. Must complete a total of 90 credits.
  2. Must complete a core requirement of 33 credits minimumconsisting of the core requirement and 3 additional credits of Fine Arts (ARTH, DAN, DRA, MUS, or, MUP). See Core Requirements, section 10.1.
  3. Must complete a minimum of 24 credits in a concentration. A higher minimum is specified in some concentrations. Please refer to each concentration for maximum credits allowed.
  4. Must complete at least 18 credits in a minor, of which 6 credits must be at the senior-level; alternatively, a second concentration is permissible.
  5. May take only 6 credits of junior-level English and 6 credits of junior-level Religious Studies.
  6. May take no more than 42 credits of junior-level courses for credit toward a degree.
  7. Must present credit in a 30-level Language Other than English or one of ARAB 102, [Approved by the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Arts on March 2, 2017] CHIN 102, FR 102, GERM 102, GRK 102, HEBR 102, LAT 102, or SPA 102.

  12. Must take at least 42 credits in Arts courses.
  13. Must maintain a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.0.
  14. Must complete 30 of the 90 credits required to graduate at Concordia University of Edmonton. Moreover, at least 18 credits of the last 30 credits must be completed at Concordia University of Edmonton (Residency Requirement, section B).
  15. May receive up to 60 credits from another institution. Transfer credits may vary depending on program requirements.
    Please refer to the individual Concentrations for restrictions. Students planning to take courses for credit at other institutions must follow the procedures for Visiting Student Permission, section 4.4.3.A.
  16. To graduate, must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 and a GPA of 2.0 in the credits required for the area of concentration. For further information, see Graduation Requirements, section 9.7.1.

B. Residency Requirement

Candidates for Concordia University of Edmonton’s three-year Bachelor of Arts degree must complete the specified credits at Concordia University of Edmonton (section A.15). A maximum of 9 credits of junior-level Drama courses may be counted towards a Drama concentration.

 

2. English

24-30 credits required, to include:

  1. 6 credits of junior-level English
  2. One of ENG 303, 323, 331, 338, 339, 350, or 354
  3. One of ENG 324, 330, 341, 342, 343, 355 or 356
  4. ENG 491 or 492
  5. 9-15 credits of unspecified senior-level English courses
3. French

24-30 credits required, to include:

  1. FR 211 and FR 212
  2. FR 251 and FR 252
  3. FR 303 and 312
  4. FR 372
  5. One of FR 492, 493, or 494
  6. 0-6 credits of unspecified senior-level French courses

Students who take FR 303 as a FR 492 capstone or FR 312 as a FR 493 capstone must complete an additional 3 credits of unspecified senior-level French.

 

4. History

24-30 credits required, to include:

  1. HIS 111 or 112
  2. HIS 290
  3. One of the following senior-level Canadian History courses; HIS 260, 261, 365, 366, 369 or 370;
  4. One of the following senior-level European History courses: HIS 207, 208, 212, 213, 218, 309, 315, 333, or 340;
  5. One of the following senior-level Special Theme History courses: HIS 206, 221, 250, 251, 300 (301, 302, or 303), 355, 415, or 416;
  6. HIS 410
  7. A further 6-12 credits of unspecified senior-level History courses.

Students with a concentration in History must complete a minimum of 9 HIS credits at the 300- or 400-level (in addition to HIS 410).

 

5. Music

30-33 credits required, to include:

  1. 3 credits chosen from MUP 126 and 127, 142 and 143, 162 and 163, 164 and 165, 166 and 167, or 168 and 169
  2. MUS 211 and 212
  3. MUS 213 and 214
  4. MUS 261, 262, 263, 281 or 282
