Beginners’ Chinese I – CHIN 101A

Course description:  An entry-level course designed to give students a good introduction to spoken and written Chinese. Students will learn 150 characters and 150 vocabulary words.

Prerequisites:  None.
Co-requisites:  None.
Hours: (0 – 5L – 0): 65 Instruction hours.
Credit value: 3

Course objectives:

The course outcomes include:

  1. Linguistic knowledge: pronunciation, characters and words, grammar and function, them and discourse.
  2. Linguistic skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing
  3. Cultural competence: cultural knowledge, cultural understanding, cross-cultural competence, international perspectives.
  4. Strategies: affective strategies, learning strategies, communicative strategies, resource strategies, interdisciplinary strategies.

The objectives of CHIN 101 are: Students will be able to understand basic language materials related to common personal and daily life. They can retell, recite and copy words or sentences with fair accuracy and can write words or sentences following example. They will begin to develop interest and confidence in learning the Chinese language. They will acquire preliminary knowledge of learning strategies, communicative strategies, resource strategies and interdisciplinary strategies under the instructor’s guidance. They will gain introductory Chinese cultural knowledge, preliminary cross-cultural competence and international perspectives.

Course description: As a sequel course to CHIN 101, this course is designed to give students further training in spoken and written Chinese. Students will learn 300 characters and 300 vocabulary words.

They will begin to develop interest and confidence in learning the Chinese language. They will acquire preliminary knowledge of learning strategies, communicative strategies, resource strategies and interdisciplinary strategies. They will build Chinese cultural knowledge, cross-cultural competence and international perspectives gained from CHIN 101.
