10.0 Undergraduate Programs 2016/2017

10.1 Core Requirements

Concordia University of Edmonton has long prided itself on the delivery of a liberal education as a solid foundation for Theory life. The Core is designed to fulfill the Mission, Vision, and Values Framework at Concordia University of Edmonton. The Core Requirements allow flexibility for students, while offering students the opportunity to develop a wide range of knowledge.

All students in a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Management, or Bachelor of Science program must complete the Concordia University of Edmonton Core requirements as outlined. All students in a Bachelor of Arts program must complete an additional 3 credits of Fine Arts (ARTH, DAN, DRA, MUS, or MUP).

10.2 Bachelor of Arts

10.2.0 Educational Objectives: Faculty of Arts

The Departments of Fine Arts, Literature and Language, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Psychology, and Social Sciences have designed for you a high-quality educational experience to help you attain the following objectives:

  1. To discover, from scientific, theological, humanistic, and creative perspectives, insights from past and present into what it means to be human.
  2. To develop methods of thought and inquiry that will lay the foundation of your future knowledge and wisdom.
  3. To learn to read and to listen critically, to write persuasively, and to communicate with a confidence born of knowledge.
  4. To train in the latest methods of research and digital literacy appropriate to each area of study.
  5. To perceive and foster connections among your areas of study, the Christian tradition, and the wider world around you.
  6. To identify with Concordia University of Edmonton’s aim of developing “independent thinkers, ethical leaders, reflective servants in their occupations, and citizens for the common good.”
  7. To create the basis of your future academic, professional, or vocational career, enabling you to “learn for life.”

10.2.1 Four-Year Bachelor of Arts Degree Programs

A. General Academic Requirements

Candidates for Concordia University of Edmonton’s four-year Bachelor of Arts programs:

  1. Must complete a total of 120 credits.
  2. Must complete a core requirement of 33 credits minimum—consisting of the core requirements and 3 additional credits of Fine Arts (ARTH, DAN, DRA, MUS, or, MUP). See Core Requirements, section 10.1.
  3. Must complete 36-60 credits in a major , or complete a General Studies major.
  4. Except for the General Studies major, must complete at least 18 credits in a minor, of which 6 credits must be at the senior-level; alternatively, a second major is permissible.
  5. May take only 6 credits of junior-level English and 6 credits of junior-level Religious Studies.
  6. May take no more than 48 credits of junior-level courses for credit toward a degree.
  7. May include core course requirements in the major and minor. However, the same course may not be counted toward both the major and minor requirements.
  8. Must complete 60 of the 120 credits required to graduate at Concordia University of Edmonton. Moreover, at least 18 credits of the last 30 credits must be completed at Concordia University of Edmonton (Residency Requirement, section B).
  9. May take no more than 72 credits in any one discipline; however, only 42 credits are permitted in any discipline of a concentration of the General Studies major. [Approved by General Faculties Council on June 10, 2016]
  10. Must take a minimum of 102 credits in Arts and Science courses, of which a minimum of 66 credits must be Arts.
  11. For continuation in the four-year English, Music, Religious Studies, and Sociology degree program, must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 or higher, and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in the major. For the four-year General Studies degree program, must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0. Students in the applied emphasis program in Psychology should consult the program and GPA requirements in section C, item 5.
    Students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirements to continue in the four-year BA should consult with a Registration Advisor regarding the three-year BA degree program.
  12. For graduation, must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 in the 120 credits applicable to the degree, and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in the courses in the major. For further information, see Graduation Requirements, section 9.7.1.
    Candidates who do not meet the minimum GPA requirements for the four-year BA should consult a Registration Advisor regarding the three-year BA degree.
  13. Must present credit in a 30-level Language Other than English or one of FR 102, GERM 102, GRK 102, HEBR 102, LAT 102, or SPA 102.

B. Residency Requirement

Candidates for Concordia University of Edmonton’s four-year Bachelor of Arts degree must complete the specified credits at Concordia University of Edmonton (section A.8). Students who plan to take courses at other institutions must first follow the procedures for Visiting Student Permission, section 4.4.3.A.

C. Major Requirements

1. English

Students intending to use the four-year degree in English as the basis for graduate studies are urged to obtain the advice of the Chair of Department of Literature and Language in planning their program. They are also strongly recommended to take the Enhanced Program.

Basic Program: 36-45 credits required, to include:

  1. ENG 100 or (ENG 101 or ENG 111) and (ENG 102 or ENG 112) ENG 100 is strongly recommended
  2. One of ENG 323, 324, 330, or 331
  3. ENG 338 or 339
  4. 6 credits chosen from ENG 341, 342, 343, 350, 354, 355, or 356
  5. One of ENG 365, 366, 367, 392, 393, 394, 395, 396, 397, or 398

  10. 3-12 credits of unspecified senior-level English courses

Note:

  1. In addition to 36 or more credits of English, all four-year English majors may also count up to 12 credits chosen from CLAS 201, WRI 300, WRI 310, WRI 391, WRI 392, C LIT 201 and C LIT 202 as part of their English major.
  2. ENG 342 or ENG 356 may also simultaneously be used in partial fulfilment of requirement (d); ENG 396 may also simultaneously fulfil requirement (e).
  3. With the approval of the Chair of Department of Literature and Language, courses in the ENG 401-425 series may meet one of the distribution requirements (b) to (g), depending on the topic.
  4. Students intending to pursue graduate studies in English are encouraged to take both ENG 491 and ENG 492.

2. General Studies

This multidisciplinary program allows students to gain understanding and experience in more than one discipline without the requirement that the learning be integrated. Students would be able select two or more concentrations for study, customizing their course selections to meet their own interests and career aspirations.

Students for the four-year Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in General Studies:

  1. must complete 2 or 3 concentrations from Concentration Requirements,
  1. if only completing 2 concentrations, may choose to complete a minor consisting of at least 18 credits, of which 6 credits must be at the senior-level
  2. may include core requirements in the concentrations and minor; however, the same courses may not be used in 2 concentrations or a concentration and a minor
3. Music

    The Psychology Department strongly recommends PSY 211.

WRI 300 is strongly recommended.

5. Psychology (Applied Emphasis)

Students must apply for admission to the third year of this program. Specific admission requirements are published in section 3.3.

For continuation to the fourth year of the Basic Program, students must pass PSY 486, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the 90 credits applicable to the degree, and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in Psychology credits. For continuation to the fourth year of the Enhanced Program, students must pass PSY 486, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the 90 credits applicable to the degree and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in Psychology credits, have a current security clearance, and receive consent of the Psychology department.

Basic Program: 42-60 credits required, to include:

  1. PSY 104 and 105
  2. PSY 211 or equivalent with a minimum grade of C- (MAT 151 and SOC 210 are acceptable equivalents). The Psychology Department strongly recommends PSY 211.

PHIL 290 is strongly recommended.

Students are strongly advised to take at least six credits of a Language Other than English which relates to their major interest (e.g., Hebrew or Greek in Biblical studies; German, Latin or French in Reformation studies).

7. Sociology

The four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology enables students to study a substantive area of interest in greater depth.

42-60 credits required, to include:

  3. SOC 210 (MAT 151 and PSY 211 are acceptable equivalents) and 315

10.2.2 Three-Year Bachelor of Arts Degree Programs

A. General Academic Requirements

Candidates for Concordia University of Edmonton’s three-year Bachelor of Arts programs:

  1. Must complete a total of 90 credits.
  2. Must complete a core requirement of 33 credits minimumconsisting of the core requirement and 3 additional credits of Fine Arts (ARTH, DAN, DRA, MUS, or, MUP). See Core Requirements, section 10.1.
  3. Must complete a minimum of 24 credits in a concentration. A higher minimum is specified in some concentrations. Please refer to each concentration for maximum credits allowed.
  4. Must complete at least 18 credits in a minor, of which 6 credits must be at the senior-level; alternatively, a second concentration is permissible.
  5. May take only 6 credits of junior-level English and 6 credits of junior-level Religious Studies.
  6. May take no more than 42 credits of junior-level courses for credit toward a degree.
  7. Must present credit in a 30-level Language Other than English or one of FR 102, GERM 102, GRK 102, HEBR 102, LAT 102, or SPA 102.
  8. May include core course requirements in concentrations and minors. However, the same course may not be counted toward both concentration and minor requirements.
  9. Must take a minimum of 3 credits in 6 different disciplines.

  15. May receive up to 60 credits from another institution. Transfer credits may vary depending on program requirements.
    Please refer to the individual Concentrations for restrictions. Students planning to take courses for credit at other institutions must follow the procedures for Visiting Student Permission, section 4.4.3.A.
  16. To graduate, must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 and a GPA of 2.0 in the credits required for the area of concentration. For further information, see Graduation Requirements, section 9.7.1.

10.3 Bachelor of Management

10.3.0 Educational Objectives: Faculty of Management

The Faculty of Management at Concordia University of Edmonton is committed to developing “Ethical Leaders for a Global Economy”. The goal is to encourage students to think strategically, using both their hearts and their minds: understanding that the success of any business can be measured by its ability to build and nurture quality relationships internally and externally.

This first objective is the foundation for the Faculty’s more specific objectives. Concordia University of Edmonton has designed its Management program:

  1. To graduate professionals who show leadership in their field.
  2. To integrate and involve the community in our programs as mentors, teachers, advisors, and employers.
  3. To develop and deliver targeted programs that are widely recognized for the quality of the learning experience.
  4. To freely share knowledge, skills, research, and values.
  5. To serve all internal and external stakeholders in timely, effective, and efficient ways.
  6. To stay abreast of recent developments and research, and to maintain professional contacts in the communities in which our graduates seek career opportunities.

10.3.1 Four-Year Bachelor of Management Degree Program

Concordia University of Edmonton’s Bachelor of Management program has been designed to cultivate graduates with a combination of superior professional/technical competency and effective management/leadership skills that will allow them to excel in any industry.

The program’s core curriculum integrates professional and technical courses in accounting, financing, information technology, human resources, operations, and marketing, with management/leadership, communication, and organizational studies courses that foster strategic and critical thinking, creativity, well-roundedness, interpersonal effectiveness as well as social and ethical accountability.

Practical and relevant learning is enhanced through the program’s engagement of industry experts in the classroom, an employer advisory committee consisting of high profile business and community leaders, a 450-hour practicum, student consulting projects, and other experiential learning activities.

The program is innovative and highly flexible, giving students the opportunity to complete their Bachelor of Management degree with an emphasis in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Leadership, or Marketing, or with a minor in various fields from the Faculties of Arts and Science. Students in other programs may also enhance their degree with a minor in Business.

The Bachelor of Management degree prepares students to enter the workforce directly as well as provides the necessary requirements for students to pursue graduate studies in a wide range of business, academic, and professional fields.

10.4.0 Educational Objectives: Faculty of Science

The educational objectives of the Faculty of Science support the mission and values of Concordia University of Edmonton. Concordia University of Edmonton has designed its Science programs:

  1. To educate its students in both depth and breadth in one or more of the scientific disciplines.
  2. To develop in its students methods of thought and inquiry that lay the foundations for continuous learning.
  3. To enable students to explore and to foster connections with other fields within the liberal-arts tradition.
  4. To be widely recognized for their quality.
  5. To develop in students the ability to conduct scientific research.
  6. To furnish its students with the basis for graduate study, professional education, and successful careers.
  7. To develop graduates who are ethical leaders and contributing members of society.

10.4.1 Four-Year Bachelor of Science Degree Programs

A. General Academic Requirements

Candidates for Concordia University of Edmonton’s four-year Bachelor of Science programs:

  1. Must complete a total of 120 credits.
  2. Must complete the core requirement of 30 credits minimum. See Core Requirements, section 10.1.
  3. Must complete 36-60 credits in a major, or 36-72 credits in a principal area of concentration as noted in the specific majors.
  4. Must complete a minimum of 6 credits at the 400-level in the major.
  5. Must complete at least 18 credits in a minor, of which 6 credits must be at the senior-level; alternatively, a second major is permissible.
  6. May take only 6 credits of junior-level English and 6 credits of junior-level Religious Studies.
  7. May take no more than 48 credits of junior-level courses for credit toward a degree. However, 54 credits are permitted for Mathematics majors.
  8. May include core course requirements in the major and minor. However, the same course may not be counted toward both the major and minor requirements.
  9. Must complete 60 of the 120 credits required to graduate at Concordia University of Edmonton. Moreover, at least 18 credits of the last 30 credits must be completed at Concordia University of Edmonton (Residency Requirement, section B).
  10. Must take a minimum of 102 credits in Arts and Science courses, of which a minimum of 66 credits must be Science.
  11. For continuation in the four-year program, must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 or higher and a GPA of 2.3 or higher in the major.
    Students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirements to continue in the four-year BSc should consult with a Registration Advisor regarding the three-year BSc degree.
  12. For graduation, must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 in the 120 credits applicable to the degree, and a minimum GPA of 2.3 in the courses in the major. For further information, see Graduation Requirements, section 9.7.1.
    Candidates who do not meet the minimum GPA requirements for the four-year BSc should consult a Registration Advisor regarding the three-year BSc degree.

  3. Must complete a minimum of 24 credits in a concentration. A higher minimum is specified in some concentrations. Please refer to each concentration for maximum credits allowed.

  5. May take only 6 credits of junior-level English and 6 credits of junior-level Religious Studies.

  7. Are permitted to take a maximum of 6 credits from each discipline (except Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics) in the first year of studies.

  15. May receive up to 60 credits from another institution. Transfer credits may vary depending on program requirements.
