Information Systems Security and Assurance Management

Information Systems Security and Assurance Management (ISSAM) Research Cluster

Introduction

The Research Cluster in Information Systems Security and Assurance Management is a research group formed by faculty members and graduate students of the Department of Information Systems Security and Assurance Management (ISSAM).

The primary goal of the ISSAM Research Cluster is to provide a supportive research environment for students in the university’s Information Systems Security Management (ISSM) and Information Systems Assurance Management (ISAM) graduate programs.

The research cluster was originally part of the Faculty of Professional Education. Thus, members of the ISSAM Cluster closely interacted with cyber security professionals and assisted them in addressing short-term and long-term cyber security requirements.

Later, the ISSAM Cluster became part of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Nevertheless, the objectives of the Cluster remain the same: to perform needs-based research with outputs that have practical applications in supporting Alberta’s and Canada’s economies. The needs-based aspect of the research also considers the advanced skills and knowledge that ISSAM graduate students require to be successful in their professional careers.

There are two major interrelated research domains in the ISSAM Research Cluster: (1) the information systems security management (ISSM) domain, and (2) the information systems assurance management (ISAM) domain.

The two domains have been producing significant research outputs in the following areas:

  1. Assurance management
  2. Information security management and governance
  3. Network security
  4. Cloud security and security of virtualized systems
  5. Mobile devices security
  6. Security of industrial control systems and other cyber-physical systems
  7. Web security and malware prevention techniques
  8. Applied cryptography
  9. Digital forensics
  10. Privacy protection
