About the AFS Global Competence Certificate
The AFS Global Competence Certificate is an internationally recognized credential awarded to learners who successfully complete the Global Up programs. This certificate demonstrates your ability to:
- Engage thoughtfully and respectfully with diverse cultures
- Apply intercultural knowledge in real-world scenarios
- Collaborate effectively in multicultural teams
Program Options at Concordia University of Edmonton
Global Up At Home
The Global Up At Home program is a research-based initiative that enables learners to collaborate effectively across cultural differences on campus. Through a combination of reflection, live dialogue sessions, and peer forums, participants will apply intercultural theories within our own communities. Additionally, successful participants will earn the award-winning AFS Global Competence Certificate.
2024 Fall Program Details:
- Program Launch: September 1, 2024
- Application Deadline: September 30, 2024
- Program Start: October 4, 2024
- Program End: November 7, 2024
- Required Study Time: 10-15 hours plus 4 live sessions
- Live Session Dates: October 10, 17, 24, 31, 2024
- Fees: This offering is made possible by sponsorship from the Concordia Students’ Association. CUE students can enrol for free.

- Program Launch: February 1, 2025
- Application Deadline: February 21, 2025
- Program Start: March 1, 2025
- Program End: April 4, 2025
- Required Study Time: 10-15 hours plus 4 live sessions
- Live Session Dates: March 7, 14, 21, 28, 2025
- Fees: This offering is made possible by sponsorship from the Concordia Students’ Association. CUE students can enrol for free.

Global Up Abroad
The Global Up Abroad program offers an immersive experience, allowing learners to travel and engage with different cultures firsthand. This program follows a similar structure to Global Up At Home but includes the added benefit of international travel. Participants will also receive the AFS Global Competence Certificate upon successful completion.
Program Details:
- Program Launch: February 1, 2025
- Application Deadline: A month before you go abroad
- Program Start: A month before you go abroad
- Program End: A month after you return from abroad
- Required Study Time: 10-15 hours plus 4 live sessions
- Fees: $ 150+ GST
