Why does CUE need to expand its infrastructure?
CUE is growing—we are consistently welcoming high numbers of students to our campus and are on track to reach our goal of 4,000 students in the near future. Additionally, we are creating and entering new partnerships, and developing programs that require additional space and resources. As such, we need to expand our infrastructure to ensure we are meeting the needs of our campus community.
What happens if we do nothing?
Without expansion, we will be unable to meet the needs of our students, faculty, and staff, and will not have sufficient space on campus for learning, research, or service delivery.
Will operations on campus be impacted by construction?
No—CUE will continue to operate normally throughout the construction period. However, certain areas of campus may be inaccessible for periods of time in order to protect the safety of our community during construction.
How does CUE’s Campus Master Plan align with other local initiatives?
CUE’s Campus Master Plan is aligned with many local developments across the city, including the Edmonton Exhibition Lands Planning Framework. With this project, we hope to celebrate what makes CUE—and Edmonton—and continue building momentum as we strive to become Canada’s pre-eminent small university.
What engagement has been done to date regarding the project?
Our engagement process began in late 2019, with a number of engagement sessions taking place to develop a matrix of functional requirements for future developments on campus. Through the engagement sessions, we learned the most pressing needs were more academic and community spaces, and a schematic design was developed and shared with numerous stakeholders and community leaders through a series of town halls. We are continuing to discuss the project with neighbours and stakeholders, and look forward to beginning our next chapter on Ada Boulevard.
When will construction start?
We are currently working with the City of Edmonton to rezone our campus as an Urban Institutional Zone, consistent with other post-secondary institution in the city. We have submitted our application and look forward to moving forward. We anticipate construction will start in 2021.
Will CUE’s neighbours be impacted?
Construction for this development will be limited to our existing property and we will work to minimize disruption to our neighbours. We understand the concerns of our neighbours and will maintain open lines of communication to ensure we are being considerate and responsive throughout this process.
Where can I find construction updates?
We will be posting regular updates about this project and future projects on our website. We also have a mailing list—please consider signing up to receive our latest updates in your inbox.
