Future CUE

Building for the Future

Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) has been around for over 100 years. Looking forward to the next 100 years, we imagine a future where learning and research takes place on an increasingly sustainable and beautiful urban campus.

One of our many priorities at CUE is to provide an excellent student experience. Our residence capacity hasn’t grown significantly for decades and we have heard loud and clear from our students that we need new and modern residence spaces on campus. We are excited to provide you with information on our next infrastructure project, a new student residence building, that is scheduled to break ground in spring of 2025.

As we did throughout the planning process for Braaksma Hall, the University will continue to work closely with the community and stakeholders as construction takes place. This page will have the latest project information, construction timelines, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does CUE need to expand its infrastructure?

CUE is growing—we are consistently welcoming high numbers of students to our campus, and are on track to reach our goal of 4,000 students in the near future. Additionally, we are creating and entering new partnerships and developing programs that require additional space and resources.

What is the purpose of this project?

With CUE’s current and future growth, we need to expand our infrastructure to meet the needs of our campus community. As part of our commitment to providing an excellent student experience, meeting our student housing needs with new and modern residence spaces is necessary. Without expansion, we will be unable to meet the needs of our students, faculty, and staff.

What is the timeline for this project?

The project is slated to break ground in spring of 2025 and is estimated to be open for operation in 2027.

How does CUE’s Campus Master Plan Align with other local initiatives?

CUE’s Campus Master Plan is aligned with many local developments across the city, including the Edmonton Exhibition Lands Planning Framework. With this project, we hope to celebrate what makes CUE—and Edmonton —and continue building momentum as we strive to become Canada’s pre-eminent small university.

Will CUE’s neighbours be impacted?

Construction for this development will be limited to our existing property, and we will work to minimize disruption to our neighbours. We understand the concerns of our neighbours and will maintain open lines of communication to ensure we are being considerate and responsive throughout construction.

Will the addition of the student residence be enough to support CUE’s anticipated future student population of 4,000?

Yes, the addition of the residence space is anticipated to support the growth of student numbers to 4,000.

What will happen in the summer when the residence is mostly vacant from students? Will temporary or short-term occupancy be offered?

There have been discussions about occupancy during the summer break. However, we currently have no plans for short term occupancy. If and when we review the opportunity, we will engage the community in a discussion to ensure neighbors views are considered.

Will residents have access to the back alley during construction?

Yes. There may be a few occasions, such as when the water main connections are being made, that the alley may be closed for a period of a day or two. Notification will be provided to neighbours by the City of Edmonton as the service provider responsible for utilities connections being made.

Will the current residence buildings (Eberhardt Hall and Founders Hall) be demolished after the new residence is operational?

No, the two current residence buildings will be repurposed once the new residence is available for occupancy. The two buildings are Eberhardt Hall on the east side of the campus, south of Braaksma Hall, and Founders Hall on the west side of the campus, south of the Hole Academic Centre. They can be seen on the campus map here: https://concordia.ab.ca/about/campus-map/.

Will there be commercial space for food service or convenience store offerings in the residence?

Food service and purchase will be provided in the community through local grocery stores and restaurants rather than at CUE. There will be kitchen space available for residence occupants and there is a food service offered at CUE specifically for students at our cafeteria. The recently opened, and publicly accessible, Judy Kruse Student Commons also offers food purchase options.

Will there be parking available for students living in the new residence building?

Yes, there are 13 ground level stalls on the south side. These are provided for convenient access for people with mobility issues, service providers, or short-term visitors. In addition to these stalls, CUE has underground parking beneath Braaksma Hall, our above ground parking lot, and rented stalls at the Expo Centre that students can access by purchasing a parking pass.
