Principal Leadership Certification

These first two courses satisfy Alberta Education’s requirement for principal leadership certification and must be completed in order.

EDUC 680    Introduction to Educational Leadership (IEL)

A fully online course includes video and text content with assignments. Portions of the course are be pre-scheduled for cohort interaction. This course will be offered in the Fall Term for 13 weeks. Application deadline is June 30.

Course Description: The Leadership Quality Standard (LQS) is the guiding framework for the course.  Through examining ideas and insights in light of their own experience and behaviour, students will develop broad understandings of the LQS required of educational leaders. The course assists aspiring leaders to understand the LQS and how the standards might be demonstrated within a leadership context.

EDUC 685    Principal Leadership Development (PLD)

A fully online course, includes video and text content with assignments, virtual meetings, and online presentations. Portions of the course are pre-scheduled for cohort interaction. This course will be offered each Winter term as a 13 week course. Winter Term application deadline is November 1.

Course Description: Participants explore, analyze, and address issues in school-based leadership.  Participants develop professional competencies related to school leadership and administration through the examination of current educational issues.  Topics are examined from the perspectives of legal/policy and/or research, supports, alternatives, critiques, and mitigation to develop principled action.

(EDUC 680 is a prerequisite for EDUC 685)

Superintendent Leadership Certification

The completion of this third course satisfies Alberta Education’s requirement for superintendent leadership certification.

EDUC 690    Superintendent Leadership Development (SLD)

A fully online course, includes video and text content with assignments, virtual meetings, and online presentations. This course will be offered in the Summer Term as a 3-week summer course, requiring daily online contact for the term.

Course Description: Students aspiring to be educational leaders will gain an understanding of the various roles and responsibilities of school division superintendents in Alberta. Participants will investigate and learn how to apply the Superintendent Leadership Quality Standard and related competencies. Participants have already obtained their LQS certification.

These three GCEL courses, EDUC 680, EDUC 685, and EDUC 690 may be applied to CUE’s Master of Education in Educational Leadership degree.

Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership

The completion of this fourth course meets the requirement to earn a Concordia University of Edmonton Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership.

EDUC 652    Public Education Systems and their Historical Roots in Canada

A fully online course, includes video and text content with assignments, virtual meetings, and online presentations. Portions of the course are pre-scheduled for cohort interaction. The course is offered each Winter Term. Winter Term application deadline is November 1.

Course Description: Identifies historical roots of the current educational systems across Canada. Understands how past concepts of public education affects today’s approaches and systems. Supports the application of foundational knowledge about Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
