In the unlikely event of an active shooter incident on campus, the following procedure should be followed.
Scan and assess your situation; safely consider your options and act with discretion. Prioritize your safety and the safety of others.
- Run
- Exit the building safely as soon as possible; Call 911 when it is safe to do so
- Follow the directions of responding police.
- Choose a safe exit, don’t attract the shooter’s attention, protect yourself first before helping others.
- Hide. Barricade your hiding place.
- Turn off the lights and cover the windows.
- Lock the door and barricade it if you can. Improvise if you can’t look the door.
- Stay out of the line of fire (hide behind desks and away from entrances)
- Mute your phone and stay quiet – wait for the police to come to you.
- Do not answer the door until you hear an official all clear.
- Last resort – Fight.
- Improvise weapons from nearby objects.
- Commit to an aggressive physical attack.
- Stop the threat.
