Setting Yourself Up for Success

Walking into your first lecture in front of a new group of students can be intimidating. Although it takes time and practice to become a strong and confident instructor, there are things you can do to get off to a good start:

  1. Find your classroom in advance.
  2. If you are using technology, take time to explore the set up.
  3. Have a back up plan in case the technology is not working. Send IT support requests to helpdesk@concordia.ab.ca.
  4. Gather all your lecture resources as needed (whiteboard markers, chart paper, demonstration materials, etc.).
  5. Practice your lecture.
  6. Include speaking notes in your slides as cues only. Avoid reading your lecture off your slides.
  7. Bring a bottle of water. Being nervous can cause your mouth to become dry.
  8. Explore the “For Sessional Instructors” section in CUE Connect.

Lesson planning is crucial as it serves as the roadmap for effective teaching. It allows instructors to structure content, set clear objectives, and tailor activities to engage students. Just as a road map ensures a smooth journey, lesson planning paves the way for effective and purposeful teaching which contributes positively to student understanding.
