Rethinking Assessment in the Age of AI

A Two-Lane Approach

As AI advances at an overwhelming rate, instructors are compelled to find innovative ways to curb unauthorized use by redesigning and redefining assignments and assessments. Despite these challenges to academic integrity, AI also offers many new teaching and learning opportunities. Part of being prepared for life beyond university requires students to understand how AI is being used to enhance research and innovation in a given profession. For this reason, Liu and Bridgeman (2023) advocate for a “two-lane” approach; one that combines AI-proof and AI-integrated assessment.
