IT Services Security Update

Posted on: Feb 24, 2021

In the last 2 weeks, IT services has rolled out two new security features that you will encounter over the course of your interactions with CUE’s digital systems and applications.

Password Reset Notifications (Staff/Faculty Only)

As you know, your CUE password expires every 60 days. To provide advance notice even while working off-campus, you will receive an email notification 7, 3, and 1 day(s) prior to password expiration. Included in this email are instructions on how to change your password.

Compromised Account Notifications (All Students/Faculty/Staff)

Thanks in part to the cloud services that CUE makes use of including Google, Microsoft and breach tracking services such as Troy Hunt’s “Have I been pwned?”, we are able to take steps to secure CUE accounts when passwords get leaked onto the internet.

In the event your password is detected in a breach, or suspicious activity is detected on your account (such as a login from an implausible location), IT Services will immediately reset your password and send an email to your non-Concordia email address on file alerting you to the password change. You will need to reset your password through Online Services.

These emails will not include a link to reset your password. Instead, we will include instructions on how to reset your password through Online Services, in order to encourage safe behavior with respect to unsolicited emails.

For more information please contact the IT Services Help Desk at helpdesk@concordia.ab.ca or 780 479 9316.
