Welcome Dr. Carla Craveiro Salvado, Associate Vice-President, Research

Dr. Carla Craveiro Salvado joins CUE as the Associate Vice President, Research. She is focused on working closely with faculty members and students to support and enhance their research, while strengthening the relationship between research and teaching. She was most recently the Director of Operations and Research at the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. She oversaw the operations and research programs focused on supporting studies aimed at discovering new methods to prevent, treat, and cure virus-related illnesses to reduce the burden of viral disease on human health. 

Dr. Craveiro Salvado received her doctorate in Immunology from the University of Alberta where she studied the molecular requirements for innate immune cells to respond to virally infected or cancerous cells. Most recently, she was a key architect of a historical multimillion dollar provincial grant received by the University of Alberta focused on the development of a vaccine and therapeutics pipeline in Alberta. She is currently leading the organization of a pan-university grant proposal aimed at establishing a Canadian hub that will improve research systems, support the continued growth of a competitive biomanufacturing and life sciences ecosystem, and expand our talent pipeline to ensure Canada’s pandemic preparedness in the future.

Dr. Craveiro Salvado is also a passionate and award-winning educator with over 20 years of experience in various areas, including biological and health sciences, as well as English as a second language. She has taught abroad, as well as at various Canadian universities. She has also mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students in various stages of their academic career, including their senior research and thesis projects, respectively.

Dr. Craveiro Salvado is an avid soccer fan, loves to travel, supports local organizations either as a volunteer or a patron, and is always up for trying out new recipes for family and friends!
