Work Integrated Learning

Work Integrated Learning Overview

Work-integrated learning (WIL) is a form of curricular experiential education that formally integrates a student’s academic studies with quality experiences within a workplace or practice setting. WIL can occur at the course or program level and includes the development of student learning objectives and outcomes related to employability, agency, knowledge and skill mobility and life-long learning.

That framework has been adopted and adapted by the Alberta Ministry of Advanced Education.

Work Integrated Learning at CUE

WIL programming supports the transition from learning to work by providing work experience, professional skills development, and opportunities to make connections with employers. Moreover, WIL programs align with Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE)’s goal of (1) setting students up for success, whether in a career or further studies, through the delivery of high-quality and relevant academic programming; and (2) expanding opportunities for experiential learning through work-integrated learning and research opportunities with community and business partners.

International Students

All students participating in WIL gain valuable work experience and possible career opportunities. However, for international students, a co-op work permit is required to take part in WIL if it is a mandatory part of their academic program. International students cannot participate in a WIL course that is not an essential component for program completion. A co-op work permit allows a study permit holder to take part in work integrated learning (WIL) if it is a mandatory part of their academic program. The co-op work permit is separate from the work authorization which may appear on the study permit.
