SYNCHRONUS Art Festival Kicks Off at Concordia

The SYNCHRONUS art festival kicks off at Concordia on Saturday, September 8 at 2:00 p.m. with the official opening of “Flax Field,” by John Freeman and Lyndal Osborne.
Flax Field is a large and striking piece of installed visual art that covers most of Concordia’s front lawn on Ada Boulevard. The installation simulates a field of flax flowers, creating a textural sensual sense for the viewer.
Mayor Stephen Mandell and his wife Lynn will be on hand to open the work at the unveiling.
The work is just one of several events for the Art and Life arts festival called “SYNCHRONUS.” Other key events Concordia will hosts during the festival include:
- A reading by Derek Walcott – a 1992 Nobel Laureate in Literature. Mr. Walcott will read from “Another Life” on Saturday, September 22 at 7 p.m.
- A “Scientific Discussion on Flax” lead by Jan Slaski (Plant Science), Rachel McQueen (Human Ecology/Textile), and Karen Apps Eccles (Nutrition Science) on September 29 at 2 p.m.
- Readings from prominent Edmonton poets and writers featured by “Words from the Fields” on September 29 at 7 p.m.
- Choral concert – Eternal Song – performed by the Concordia Community Chorus, on November 4 at 7 p.m.
