One of the biggest attractions for mice is food crumbs, there are a number of ways to avoid attracting them:

  1. Mice often head inside in Fall and Spring. Fall because they want a warmer location and better food source and Spring as the grounds are tidied up and their nests are disturbed. Mice can enter through very small penetrations, filling gaps is one way of preventing access but it can be hard to find every access point and they can walk through doors and windows just as we can.
  2. If you bring food to your office it is best to consume it the same day so it isn’t there for the mice.
  3. If you do spill crumbs on your desk just wipe them up and if they go in your keyboard, turn it upside down and bang it gently on the desk to get the crumbs out, then wipe them up.
  4. If you do store food in your office keep it in airtight containers.
  5. If you discover signs of mice in your workspace, typically droppings the size of rice please contact Plant Operations and Custodial Services. Plant Operations x340, will trap them and Custodial Services x880, x311, will disinfect the area. There is an extremely small possibility that mice may carry Hantavirus so it is best for Custodial Services to disinfect and clean the area as they are trained in safe work practices.
