NSERC Discovery Grant awarded to Dr. Svenja Huntemann
Posted on: Jul 6, 2022Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) is pleased to announce that Dr. Svenja Huntemann, assistant professor in the Faculty of Science, has been awarded an NSERC Discovery Grant.
Funding support for Dr. Huntemann’s research program, titled “Game Values, Temperature, and Enumeration of Placement Games,” was recently announced by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
NSERC Discovery Grants are individual, five-year awards that support ongoing programs of research with long-term goals.
“When humans play games, a natural question we ask ourselves is: ‘How do we win?'” said Dr. Huntemann. “Combinatorial Game Theory uses mathematics and computer science to answer this question for pure strategy games like Chess or Go.
“The Discovery Grant will allow me to focus on analyzing pen-and-paper games, working together with national and international collaborators, as well as students right here at CUE.”
Dr. Huntemann has also received a one-time Discovery Launch Supplement, awarded to Early Career Researchers within the first year of their Discovery Grants.
“On behalf of the CUE community, I’d like to congratulate Dr. Huntemann on receiving this honour,” said Dr. Barbara van Ingen, CUE’s Vice President Academic & Provost.
“Her outstanding work is a shining example of how CUE’s faculty research creates meaningful connections, within our campus and far beyond. Our students are so fortunate to learn from Dr. Huntemann, and her esteemed research will no doubt continue to inspire many in our community.”
