Gifts & Estate Planning

What is your legacy?

Discover how you can amplify your future impact through planned giving.

Planning your gift

By donating to Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) in your estate plan, you can benefit from tax savings, a lasting legacy, and satisfaction of knowing CUE will benefit from your gift in the future.

Gifts in Will

Through a bequest, you recognize the impact CUE has had on your lives, and pay it forward by helping future students have the same opportunity.

A well-planned gift is ideal when you want to reduce or even eliminate your final income taxes. The most common types of bequests are:

  • Residual Bequest
  • Specific Bequest
  • Contingent Bequest
  • Trust Remainder Bequest

Your bequest to CUE may be one, or a combination, of the following:

  • A percentage of your estate
  • The residual of the estate
  • A specific dollar amount
  • Real estate
  • Stocks and securities
  • Gifts-in-kind
  • Insurance policies and annuities

The drafting of a Will should be arranged with the involvement of legal council.

Life Insurance

Life insurance can be a strategic, economical way to create a large and lasting charity gift. Some policy donations can also be leveraged for significant tax savings during your lifetime or estate planning. We strongly recommend that you discuss your options with a professional financial planner.

RRSPs, RRIFs and TFSAs

Many Canadians choose to eliminate deferred taxes by naming charitable organizations as final beneficiaries. If you choose to name CUE as a direct beneficiary, contact your RRSP/RRIF/TFSA holder to determine if a change of beneficiary form needs to be completed.

Securities

Donating appreciated securities is simple, cost-effective and the most tax efficient way to make a charitable gift. You can make a charitable gift of securities by using any one of the following types: prescribed bonds, units of mutual funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs), shares, warrants and futures that are listed on the stock exchanges prescribed by the Canada Revenue Agency.

You can deduct the entire gift in the current year or carry tax credits forward for up to five years.

Real Estate and Personal Property

Many Canadians have seen tremendous growth in real estate. The gift of real property is a chance to make a significant impact at CUE, as well as avoid paying taxes on capital gains when selling real estate.

As a donor, you can transfer ownership of your property (real estate, personal collections, etc.) as a donation to CUE, and receive a fair market value receipt for tax purposes now or to be used in your estate planning. Please contact us if you plan on gifting personal property to CUE.

Charitable Annuities

Did you know you can earn an income now and be confident that your legacy at CUE will thrive. There are two annuity options available:

  • Charitable Gift Annuities
    • A charitable gift annuity offers you the ability to make a significant gift while enjoy. These annuities guarantee you a consistent, fixed monthly income for life or a set term of years, while at the same time designating a portion to CUE as a gift, and provide immediate tax benefits to you.
  • Charitable Remainder Trusts
