The Passing of Mr. Harry Hole

Posted on: Jul 4, 2013

It was with great sadness that the Concordia University College community learned that Mr. Harry Hole was called from this life on July 4. Concordia counts itself fortunate to have had Harry and Muriel as friends and benefactors; in fact, while the Hole’s generosity and philanthropy is widespread throughout many institutions in Edmonton, Concordia knows itself to be Harry Hole’s legacy institution. The Hole Academic Centre stands at the heart of Concordia, and every student walking toward our Welcome Centre is greeted by a picture of Harry and Muriel that highlights their tremendous contribution to ensure the success of Concordia’s students. But beyond bricks, mortar and glass, Harry established scholarships and residence spaces for Concordia’s students; and what had been the Hole Residence on Ada Boulevard, donated to Concordia to be the President’s House, became a much needed International Student residence. In conjunction with his siblings, Harry contributed to the building of the Ralph King Athletic Centre. But ultimately, Harry Hole was there for the students as individuals, providing resources to help them succeed, ensuring that no student that came to Concordia would be deprived of the best education possible. It is in the lives of these students that Harry Hole’s legacy will live on. As President of Concordia, I feel especially privileged to have come to know Harry and Muriel over my six year tenure and want to acknowledge my indebtedness to a great Edmontonian whom I and many in this city will miss very much.

On behalf Concordia, I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Muriel and the entire Hole family. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you.
