Thunder Women’s Soccer Win Two on the Road

Posted on: Sep 23, 2013

The road less travelled is not always for the faint of heart and definitely not one that the CUCA Women's Soccer team was anticipating.  Overcoming several transportation delays, the Thunder made it to their first game on time and put in their best performance of the season, winning 5-Nil.   The game was a physical affair with Concordia establishing their possession game early in the match on the new Suncor Turf Centre at Holy Trinity School.  Striker Nicole Klepic – with her bright red coloured hair – scored an astonishing three goals in the first half on her way to earning "Player of the Match' honours.  Audrey Sydora continued the scoring in the second half with a penalty kick and Jamie Vriens added the fifth on a direct free kick from 30 yards out.  Newly recruited athlete Amy Davies – from the Thunder Women's Volleyball program – earned a shutout for the Thunder Women as the starting Goalkeeper.  On Sunday morning, additional transportation difficulties meant the Thunder arrived just 20 minutes before the scheduled start time.  "These things happen as an athlete.  You have to be able to overcome it," says Coach Imbrogno.  Overcome they did but not in the first half which saw the Thunder ladies down 1-0.  However, they did overcome the sluggish start in the second half by scoring two goals.  First year player Jill Sanders was rewarded for her run into the goal area and was able to convert a cross from out wide and 2nd year Kendra Benson sent a missile of a shot toward the net from 30 yards out for the winning goal.  "Our objective was to come up to Keyano and return with 6 points," said CUCA Captain Audrey Sydora.   The weekend victories keep the Thunder in the hunt for one of three playoff positions in the ACAC north division. Next up for the Thunder is a return date with the King's Eagles on Friday afternoon at 5 PM at Kings.  They then head back to Concordia Field for a showdown with former Thunder Coach Dean Cordeiro and his MacEwan Griffins on Saturday, September 28th.  Game time is 12 Noon.
