Thunder Men’s Soccer Lose Squeaker on Opening Day
Posted on: Sep 9, 2013The ACAC soccer season kicked off on Sunday for the Concordia Thunder Men's squad when they played host to the Grand Prairie Wolves. The Thunder came out strong and played an entertaining first half for the largest opening day crowd in many years. At the close of the first half, Concordia was down 2-Nil but came out for the second half we renewed determination and purpose and piled the pressure on the Wolves' defense. The relentless attach of the Thunder yielded dividends when a Wolves' defender handled the ball in the 18 meter box, resulting in a Thunder penalty kick. Assistant Captain Dee Govender scored on the kick putting the Thunder within one goal of the visiting Wolves. The boys continued to pile the pressure on the Wolves but unfortunately, they could not find the net again and the game ended 2-1 in favour of the Wolves. "With fully 10 men on the 18 man roster being rookies, we are still working on getting (them) integrated into the team," said Head Coach Sasha Samadi. Dee Govender earned Player of the Game honours for his leadership and good performance. Next up for the Thunder will be an away game on Friday, September 13th when they 'travel' across the river to play the Kings Eagles. They will then play host to the NAIT Ooks on Saturday at 2 PM.
