Armbruster Undergraduate Summer Research Award (AUSRA)

The Armbruster Undergraduate Summer Research Award (AUSRA) is a competitive program that offers undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in full-time research at CUE during the summer.  The award supports projects in the social sciences and humanities for undergraduate students while supervised and mentored by a CUE faculty member.  This award allows students to gain valuable hands-on experience while contributing meaningfully to ongoing scholarly work at CUE.

Value and Duration of Award

Award amount: one (1) valued at $9,000 CAD
Award period: May – August* (14 weeks; 37.5 hours per week)
*Exact dates are set annually by the Office of Research and Innovation and the Office of Financial Aid and Awards
and are announced at the time the call for applications is launched.

Eligiblity

1. Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate degree program at CUE at the time of
application.
2. Be eligible to work in Canada. International students are eligible to apply, provided their
study or work permit allows them to work full-time in Canada and is valid for the entire
term of their award. Please consult the International Office for more information.
3. Be in good academic standing and have obtained over the previous years of study a
cumulative average of at least a ‘B’. Students who do not meet the cumulative average
requirement must have a ‘B’ average on their last 30 credits. Students currently on
academic probation are not eligible.
4. Preference will be given to students who have not previously held this award.
5. Students are required to have a confirmed CUE supervisor whose research program and
proposed project for the AUSRA applicant is in social sciences and humanities.

Supervisor Requirements

1. Be a faculty member at CUE.
2. Have a social sciences- or humanities-focused research project within their research
program for the AUSRA applicant; or, if integration into the faculty member’s research
program is not possible, have the expertise to supervise and mentor the AUSRA applicant
in the completion of an independent research project.
3. Have the funding required to support the research project the AUSRA-funded student will
conduct (if funding is required and if the AUSRA applicant is integrating the supervisor’s
research program).
4. Support, mentor, and supervise the student throughout the AUSRA-funded period.
5. CUE faculty members can supervise only one AUSRA-funded student per award period.
6. Adherence to the terms and conditions of the award.

Application Procedure

To apply for the Armbruster Undergraduate Summer Research Award, students are required to:
1. integrate the research program of a CUE faculty member whose research program and
proposed project for the student is in social sciences and humanities;
a. if integration into a faculty member’s research program is not possible, the AUSRA
applicant must have a supervisor (faculty member) with the expertise required to
supervise and mentor the AUSRA applicant in the completion of an independent
research project.
2. complete the AUSRA application form – 2 parts:
a. The faculty supervisor must complete and submit part one of the AUSRA
application form;
b. The student must complete and submit part two of the AUSRA application form.
