New direction for how CUE supports teaching and research

Posted on: Apr 12, 2022

Dear colleagues,

I have an update on some changes we are making to Faculty Services. This includes introducing a Faculty Lead to oversee Research and another to oversee Teaching and Learning. I wanted to provide you with more insight into why these changes are being made.

Since stepping into my new role, I have clearly heard concerns about the increased focus of academic research at CUE. I want to assure you that teaching is a top priority for me. It is fundamental to who we are at CUE, and students choose to study here because of our exceptional teaching. This will not change.

As we move to being more research focused, we will still be known for excellence in teaching. My focus will be on scaling research and evolving in a way that’s right for CUE. We aren’t the same as other universities and our approach to research going forward will reflect the qualities that make us stand apart from the others.

As we move forward, it is critical that research informs teaching and vice versa. Strengthening the relationship between research and teaching will be a key priority for the new Faculty Lead of Research and the Faculty Lead of Teaching and Learning. These roles will work closely with Faculty members to support and enhance their work in both areas.

Thank you for welcoming me to the role of Vice-President Academic. I have enjoyed visiting  some of your Faculty Councils and look forward to more opportunities to work with everyone.

This fall, we will start building our next Academic Plan together. You will have many opportunities to be involved and I strongly encourage you to engage in this process. We will be relying on your perspectives and experience.

Thank you for all your hard work this year and for your commitment to student success.

Sincerely,

Barbara van Ingen, PhD.
Vice-President Academic & Provost
