Men’s Volleyball Get Pre-Season Tune Up in GPRC Tourney
Posted on: Oct 7, 2013The Thunder Men's Volleyball team traveled up to Grande Prairie this past weekend to play four exhibition matches vs the GPRC Wolves and two alumni teams. All four matches were competitive and gave the team (especially with so many new faces to the program) a chance to get a little more experience at the CCAA level. "The alumni teams had 2 former Team Canada National team players, so was a good challenge for the guys," stated Head Coach Joel Mrak.
On Friday, the Thunder faced the Wolves and although they competed hard they lost in straight sets 25-11, 25-23 and 25-23. Their first game on Saturday saw them take on GPRC Alumni #1 where they won the first set in extra points (27-29) before being inched out in the next three sets, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21. In their second match of the day against GPRC Alumni #2, the Thunder took the match to 5 sets before succumbing to the team of veterans (25-20, 25-22, 31-33, 19-25 and 15-8). In the final match on Sunday against the Wolves, the Thunder were again competitive but couldn't close the deal and lost in straight sets 25-21, 25-19 and 25-17.
"Despite having a short bench with injuries to 5 athletes, there were lots of positives and promise after strong play from 3rd year Team Captain Alex Ingstrup and rookie Nick Dove who led the team in offense all weekend, with 75 kills in 4 matches." The Thunder will now prepare for the ACAC regular season home opener when they host the Lakeland Rustlers on Friday, October 25th.
