Focus on Women Research and Travel Research Clusters present: The props of my faith: objects and ritual in Egeria’s 4th century pilgrimage to Jerusalem

April 3rd, 2019 at 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm in Room G303

Dr. Steven Muir will be discussing Egeria’s Travels:

A female pilgrim made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the late fourth century.  Egeria’s Travels recounts her impressions of the trip.  This text is remarkable: it is written by a female of the ancient world and it has an early date in Christian history (relatively soon after the initiatives of Constantine in establishing Christian pilgrimage).  Intriguingly, Egeria mentions venerating the incredible artifacts of the true wood of the cross and the inscription which had been above Jesus’ head.  I examine the ritual surrounding these objects, and how it gives us a glimpse into this world of long ago.
