Dr. Barbara van Ingen receives prestigious Community Inclusion Award
Posted on: May 22, 2020This morning, Dr. Barbara van Ingen, Vice-President Student Life and Learning, received Inclusion Alberta’s prestigious Community Inclusion Award, recognizing her ongoing commitment to the inclusion of students with developmental disabilities in post-secondary education.
“It is an incredible honour to receive this award,” said Dr. van Ingen. “While I am humbled to be considered a leader among those who I look up to and strive to emulate, I believe that this is award is a reflection of the culture at Concordia University of Edmonton. We are a community that cares, takes pride in our differences, and creates opportunities for people to learn, discover, and succeed.”
Inclusion Alberta partners with post-secondary institutions across the province to create inclusive classrooms and campuses, giving students with developmental disabilities the opportunity to participate in programs of study and campus life. The Inclusive Post-Secondary initiative gives students new skills and learning experiences related to their career ambitions.
“Our work with Inclusion Alberta has made our campus better, stronger, and more vibrant. I look forward to continuing to collaborate and work together so that more students with developmental disabilities will be able to pursue higher education, achieve their goals, and have the opportunity to realize their dreams,” said Dr. van Ingen.
Dr. van Ingen is a Counselling Psychologist, registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists and a member of the Psychologists Association of Alberta. She teaches Educational Psychology and Psychology, co-chairs the Wellness Research Cluster, and researches university student wellness.
