Changes in Academic Affairs

Posted on: Sep 23, 2019
A number of changes are underway in Academic Affairs.

At the end of December 2019, Dr. Colin Neufeldt’s terms as both Dean of Graduate Studies and Assistant Vice-President Academic come to an end. Following a well-earned leave, Colin will return to the faculty member role, focusing on his teaching and research. We thank Colin for his excellent administrative service to CUE and wish him well going forward in more academic pursuits.

Effective January 2020, Dr. Edgar Schmidt will assume the role of Dean of Graduate Studies, concurrently with his existing role as Dean of Education. We are confident that graduate students as well as both existing and planned graduate programs are in very safe hands with Edgar, and thank him for stepping into this important position.

Also effective January 2020, Dr. Ramses Ilarraza will take up the new role of Assistant Vice-President Research (note that this in part replaces the AVPA position, which is not being filled). Ramses has for several months been doing superlative work in the Research Officer role (covering for Lainna El Jabi, who returns in April), and we look forward to his contributions in this vital leadership role, helping shape our evolving research culture at CUE.

You may also have noted that we are advertising for a new Dean of Arts. Dr. Neil Querengesser’s term comes to an end in June 2020, at which time he will take a well-deserved leave. Neil has had a tremendous impact on the Faculty of Arts, which is now positioned for a new leader to take it to the next level.
