Sacred Music Festival Highlights Three Female Conductors

Posted on: Oct 18, 2019

Concordia’s three choirs, the Concert Choir, Community Chorus, and Bella Voce, collaborate with two other guest ensembles in the nineteenth annual Sacred Music Festival Sunday, October 20, at the Winspear Centre for Music. “O Come, Let Us Sing” lifts up the human voice as a profound vehicle of sacred praise in a program of mostly Canadian works.

This year the festival also highlights three prominent local female conductors associated with Concordia. In addition to Dr. Joy Berg, who conducts the three Concordia choirs, Assistant Professor of Music Jolaine Kerley will be on stage as conductor of Ariose Women’s Choir. And our composition instructor Laura Hawley will be in the spotlight as both conductor of Da Camera Singers and composer! The massed choirs will sing two of her works, including a piece commissioned for the occasion. “Earth’s Secret Soul,” based on a text by Canadian poet Archibald Lampman, seeks to portray sounds of “the spinning cosmos.”

Watch for second-year student (and mom of four!) Annie Randall singing in the Concordia Concert Choir as well as both guest choirs. Yes, she likes to run! And sing!

Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, students and children plus applicable service charges and are available from the Winspear Box Office (780.428.1414) or Concordia’s Bookstore (through Wednesday).
