Diligence with illness prevention
Posted on: May 13, 2016Our Fort McMurray evacuees have been through a hard time, there is a very small number of them who have gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. GI infections can be transmitted if we are not careful. Custodial Services have increased high touch surface cleaning in the residences, the cafeteria and other areas of campus where evacuees frequent. There are certain precautions that we can all take to avoid becoming sick. The following recommendations are from MyHealth.Alberta.ca website. Hand washing with soap and water before eating and after using the washroom is one of the easiest preventative measures. if-hp-ipc-flu-handwash-how-to

How can you prevent infection with noroviruses?
You can help prevent infection by doing the following:
Wash your hands often, especially after using the washroom and before handling food.
Wash fruits and vegetables and steam oysters before eating them.
If you suspect that your drinking water is contaminated, boil water for 1 minute (3 minutes at elevations above 6,500 feet). Then cool and refrigerate it. Water filters will not remove noroviruses.
Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces immediately after vomiting or having diarrhea by using a bleach-based household cleaner or 0.5 accelerated hydrogen peroxide.
Immediately remove and wash soiled clothing or linens after vomiting or having diarrhea. Use hot water and soap.
Flush vomit and/or stool in the toilet. And make sure that the surrounding area is kept clean.
Do not prepare food if you have symptoms of foodborne illness and for 3 days after you recover.
