Thunder Women’s Soccer get ‘Blue Ribbon’ Finishing in Second Place
Posted on: Oct 20, 2014In their final regular season game this past Saturday, the Thunder Women's Soccer team played to a 6-0 victory over the visiting Keyano College to clinch second place in the ACAC North Conference. Jill Sander scored the first of her two goals late in the opening half as Concordia sledged their way into a 1-0 lead. The Thunder ladies went on to score five goals (Kaitlyn Diduck, Jill Sander, Karey Lubkey, Brittany Boe and Anne Perrault) in the second half to finish with a strong ball movement fashion that they would need to demonstrate heading into the ACAC Provincial Championship.
Playoffs for the Thunder begin this Friday, October 24th at Noon when Concordia will play their opening match versus the third seeded Lethbridge Kodiaks from the South Division. All second and third place finishers will need to play three games in three days to play for the ACAC title whereas the top seeds of each conference get a direct bye into the second round. “Obviously we wanted to finish first, but considering where we ended up last year (fourth in the north and out of the playoffs) we will look forward to this challenge,” stated second year Head Coach Franco Imbrogno The rookie-laden line-up who – in recent years – would have received 'blue ribbons' for finishing second place in school related activities have the opportunity to compete for the provincial title and an entry to the CCAA National Championship to be held at Medicine Hat College on November 5-8th. The Thunder would have to win all three games to do so; a plausible feat. “It’s all about belief and competing in every moment of the game,” says Coach Imbrogno. "It’s important we get off to a good start; belief and momentum can be our vehicle.” Good Luck Thunder!!!
