Thunder Woman’s Basketball Open Regular Season
Posted on: Oct 21, 2013On Saturday Oct 19th, the Thunder Women’s Basketball team opened up their regular season with a visit from the SAIT Trojans. The Thunder came out of the gate looking to get the 2013-14 campaign off to a good start. "With a long season ahead, it will take some time for the players to get familiar with each other, especially having such a young nucleus," stated first year Head Coach Robbie Valpreda. The first quarter started off quite well for the Thunder squad, up by five after one. As the Trojans began to get their confidence back it became an uphill battle for the Thunder as they ended the half with a 37-26 lead for SAIT. Concordia managed just 4 pts in the second quarter.
With the first half behind them, the Thunder game out of the halftime break cutting SAIT's lead to just nine. But with some crucial mistakes and not being able to finish on the offensive end, the Thunder eventually fell to the Trojans, 80-40. “We're still trying to mesh together,” said Coach Valpreda. "Every game for us is a chance to get better, whether we win or lose. SAIT is an experienced team and they have some size which we don’t. With that being said, veterans Railene Hooper and Meagan McIntosh did a tremendous job for us in the post. We will get better, we will learn how to grind out games and we will continue to work hard in good times and bad. Sometimes adversity looks you right in the face and asks what your next move is. We need to look right back at it with confidence and strength and push that out of the way. The biggest thing we need to do as a team is learn from our mistakes, correct them and get better individually and as a team."
The Thunder's next game will be a rare Sunday event wherein they host the Olds College Bronco's on October 27th. Tip off is at 3 PM.
