Thunder Men’s Basketball Off to 1-0 Start

Posted on: Oct 21, 2013

The Thunder Men’s basketball squad began their 2013-14 ACAC regular season this past Saturday night at home against the SAIT Trojans.  Falling behind early, the Thunder battled back from two separate 10-point deficits in the first half to cut the SAIT lead to 2 at half. A strong 3rd quarter saw the Thunder go up as many as 10 and took a 4 point lead into the 4th where they would continue their push and finish up with an 82-73 win. “Every game in the ACAC is critical,” stated Coach Wood, “These 2 point games against teams from the south division go a long way to improving your chances of getting a playoff spot and improving that spot.  You can’t make the playoffs in the first game of the year but you can definitely hurt yourself.  We had a great team effort tonight with everyone making positive contributions.”
Leading the way for the Thunder were 5th year veterans Dave Shantz, Jamaal Bucknor and Dallas Wright.  Dave had a very efficient night with 19 points on 9/13 shooting while adding 9 rebounds.  Jamaal had his usual double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds and flirted with a triple double adding 7 assists.  Dallas added 15 to go along with 4 assists and 3 steals. Ben Grimsrud was key off the bench with 4 points and a career high 10 rebounds.  Liban Abdi-Aziz was also great in a reserve role with 9 points and 5 rebounds.
The Thunder welcome the Olds Broncos to the Ralph King Athletic Centre this coming week in the rare Sunday matinee with a 5pm start on October 27th.
