Thunder Men’s Volleyball Take Two Hard Losses
Posted on: Nov 4, 2013The Thunder Men's Volleyball team faced a determined foe in the Augustana Vikings in this past weekend of ACAC competition. On Thursday night at home, the Thunder played a highly entertaining match but came out on the losing end of a 3-1 set decision (25-16, 23-25, 25-12, 25-15). Rookie Nick Dove had a great night with 15 kills and 12 digs and 2nd year Connor Reeves continued his early season dominance with 14 kills, 4 blocks and an ace. Second year Libero Matt Fulton recorded a phenomenal 38 digs and earned Player of the Game honours. "Thursday night we played well enough to win and the score doesn't really show how close the match was", stated Coach Joel Mrak. "We dug Augustana 91 times in 4 sets, which is about double the per set average for Men's volleyball in the ACAC. It was great to see guys making the effort to make plays anywhere in the court and Nick Dove set the tone early in the match by diving through the bench to save a ball on a spectacular play. In the moment, Connor Reeves summed it up saying "Any chance you get to wreck the bench, you take it!". Despite having more kills and digs than Augustana, it was a disappointing result," concluded Mrak.
On Friday at Augustana, the Thunder were unable to sustain the intensity from the night before and went down in straight sets 25-20, 25-16 and 25-16. Josh Gaudet led the way with 8 kills and 7 digs while Connor Reeves matched his teammate with 8 kills. Christian Legg had 10 digs in the contest. "Saturday was not a bad match either, but came down to (us) being a little more timid and failing to match the effort from the previous night," opined Mrak. "Still, we are battling ourselves with the number of errors we continue to make and we need to improve on that going forward."
The Thunder will now have a bye week before getting back in action on November 15th when they will host the King's Eagles.
