Thunder Indoor Track Team Kick Off Season at SAIT

Posted on: Feb 3, 2014

On Saturday the Thunder Track teams got their indoor seasons started at the New Balance Trojan Invitational in Calgary.  "There were some fantastic performances," said Head Coach Matt Norminton.  "The guys and girls ran very well considering we didn't really back off on the training heading into this one.  They were running on tired legs and it was the first indoor meet of the season so I'm pretty pleased."
The women's 800m was the first event which saw Tania Eljurdi make her debut for the Thunder women.  She finished in 13th place overall and became the 7th fastest Thunder woman ever over that distance.  In the Ladies 1500m, Marriya Jenkins got outkicked by her Grande Prairie rival Jamie Wigmore to finish 2nd overall in her 4th fastest ever 1500m.  Shelby Edgar also made her debut on the track, winning her 1500m heat and finishing in 10th overall to become the 3rd fastest ever Thunder lady over that distance.
On the men's side, Ben Thomas got things going with a big personal best in the 800m, winning his heat to finish 9th overall.  Chris Gaertner was 12th overall while Cody Krantz was just behind him in 13th overall position.  In the 1500m, Kevin Chambers ran a very smart race to finish 2nd overall in his 5th fastest 1500m.  Men's team Captain Joel Perren ran his 7th fastest 1500m to finish 8th overall. Chambers, Gaertner, Perren and Thomas all doubled back at the end of the meet to run the 4x400m relay, an event in which they won the ACAC indoor title last year and set a new ACAC record.  The men all ran very well, breaking their own record but unfortunately the Lethbridge men were a few seconds quicker on the day so the Thunder men were relegated to 2nd place.  "I know all the guys can find another second or two," said coach Norminton.  "We'll give the Kodiaks a really good run for their money at the indoor champs; I know it".
Next up for the Thunder is the Alberta Indoor Games being hosted at the University of Alberta on Saturday and Sunday, February 8th and 9th.
