Thunder Badminton Team Travel to Honolulu

Posted on: Jan 12, 2015

The Thunder Badminton Team just returned from competing in the 2015 Honolulu Open in Hawaii over the Christmas/New Year's break.  They enjoyed some very nice weather and some great competition from some of the local players in Hawaii. Accompanying the Thunder on the trip were NAIT and King's College.  The tournament gets the Thunder ready for the upcoming semester of ACAC Badminton competition. The Thunder had some great results at the tournament.  Second year player Rachael Smillie won the Gold Medal in Women's Singles and then followed it up with a Gold Medal in Women's Doubles with team mate Lindsay Ross.  Rachael could not quite complete the Triple Crown, but claimed a 2nd place finish with partner Kieran Johnson in Mixed Doubles. Coady Duncan and Willow Frissell won a Bronze Medal in Mixed Doubles.  Lindsay Ross won a Bronze Medal in Women's Singles and Andre Leblanc won a Bronze Medal in the Men's Singles event.  CCAA Apprenticeship Coach Samantha Wong claimed a 2nd place finish in the Women's Singles category. "It was another great trip and an experience that all the athletes will never forget," said Coach Kevin MacAlpine.
Next up the Thunder will be travelling to Olds for their first tournament of the year on Jan 24/25.
