Renewable Natural Gas at the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant

This seminar will provide an overview of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) including sources of RNG, market developments, and upgrading technologies. A case study will be presented for the Gold Bar RNG project, which EPCOR is currently developing in Edmonton.

Speaker Information

Derek Hollman; ‎Senior Manager, Project Development (Sustainable Energy), ‎EPCOR

Derek is responsible for the development of sustainable energy related projects including green power generation, renewable natural gas, and district energy.

Derek rejoined EPCOR in March 2016. He previously worked for EPCOR in the Generation Business Unit from 2003 until the creation of Capital Power Corporation in 2009.  Derek worked in various roles at EPCOR and Capital Power for 10 years including Senior Manager, Coal Production at Genesee Generating Station, responsible for the Genesee Mine Joint Venture, fuel supply and ash sales for all 3 Genesee units.  He also held the role of Senior Manager, Renewable Operations with overall responsibility for Halkirk, Quality Wind, and Kingsbridge wind farms.

Prior to rejoining EPCOR, Derek was a senior project development lead with Enbridge Pipelines, focusing on development of sustaining capital projects across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec.  Derek was the engineering lead for water treatment and disposal in Montreal related to the Line 9B reversal hydrotest.

Derek graduated from the University of Alberta MBA program in 2010, specializing in Natural Resources, Energy, and Environment.  He also completed a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering at the University of Alberta in 2003, and attained his Professional Engineering designation in 2006.

McNeil Centre for Applied Renewable Energy (McNeil C.A.R.E) and the Concordia Alumni Association are proud to present the Renewable Energy Speaker Series. This speaker series aims to provide CUE members (students, alumni, staff and faculty) and the community in general with the opportunity to explore renewable energy solutions, learn about the challenges faced by the sustainable energy sector (industry, government and society), careers in the renewable energy sector and interact with experts from across Canada and beyond.
