Join us on August 31st for Faculty Development Day 2016 at MacEwan University. We’ve got an incredible lineup of speakers and events and we’re working hard to make this our best FD Day yet. Whether you attend each year or have never attended before, this will be the one not to miss. Free registration is available for anyone at Concordia with a teaching role, including faculty, library staff, and sessional instructors. Free parking is available – simply use the MacEwan parkade and we will provide you with an exit ticket.
The theme of this year’s event is “Making a Difference.” Whether your interests lie in making a difference in student learning through new approaches to teaching or in making a difference in our local community through your work as a faculty member, we have a broad array of sessions from which you can choose. We also have two fantastic keynote speakers who will each deliver an address to the entire group and a smaller workshop.
Our morning will kick off with a plenary address from Dr. Shauneen Pete. Dr. Pete has served as Vice-President (Academic) and Interim President at First Nations University of Canada and is currently an Associate Professor and Executive Lead – Indigenization at the University of Regina. A rising star in Canadian academia, Dr. Pete has gained national attention for her work in helping universities to think through how they will respond to the TRC’s Calls to Action. Her plenary address, “Indigenization in Canadian Higher Education: Moving toward Reconciliation,” will be followed by an interactive workshop entitled “Indigenizing Academic Programs? How Do I Teach What I Wasn't Taught?.”
At lunch, another very special guest, Dr. Ken Bain, will deliver a keynote on “Fostering Deep Learning” followed by an afternoon workshop that expands on the same topic. Dr. Bain was the founding director of four major teaching and learning centers: the Center for Teaching Excellence at New York University, the Searle Center for Teaching Excellence at Northwestern University, the Center for Teaching at Vanderbilt University, and the Research Academy for University Learning at Montclair University.
Dr. Bain’s now classic book What the Best College Teachers Do (Harvard University Press, 2004) won the 2004 Virginia and Warren Stone Prize for an outstanding book on education and society, and remains one of the top-selling books on higher education over the last decade. It has been translated into twelve languages and was the subject of an award-winning television documentary series in 2007. The sequel, What the Best College Students Do(Harvard UP), won the Virginia and Warren Stone Prize in 2012, and has become an international bestseller.
Faculty Development Day events will also include over twenty workshop sessions, a wine and cheese reception with live music from MacEwan faculty members, the unveiling of this year’s MacEwan Book of the Year, and a host of door prizes including tickets to an Edmonton Oilers game and free attendance at next year’s National Great Teachers Seminar in the Canadian Rockies (a $1500 value).
