Responding to Ransomware Attacks
The presentation explores aspects of the growing ransomware threat taking the audience through the lens of two real attacks. The presentation considers issues around payment as well as issues using blockchain. Mr. Kratz concludes looking at options to recover ransom payments and steps to reduce the risk of these attacks.

About the Speaker
Martin Kratz, B.Sc., J.D., Q.C.
Martin Kratz is an author, professor and former senior technology and intellectual property (IP) lawyer who led the IP practice and the Technology practice Groups for Bennett Jones LLP. His practice was focused around IP and technology law, which includes data protection, privacy, cyber security, IP transactions, strategic alliances, mergers, acquisitions and technology transfers and ecommerce matters. Martin has been internationally recognized as a leading lawyer. Among other recognition he has been identified as one of Canada’s most creative lawyers by LEXPERT-Thomson in the US Guide to Canada’s 100 Most Creative Lawyers. Martin received the Founders Award from (ISC)2 and he was a Fellow of the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS). Martin chaired the Legal Education Society of Alberta conference on Technology and Law in May and June 2021. Martin has written 19 books, 40 book chapters and over 450 articles on various topics involving IP, technology law, cyber security.
