Nominations for Honorary Doctorate

Posted on: Sep 11, 2017

Nominate someone who inspires you as our next Honorary Degree recipient

Concordia University of Edmonton invites you to nominate an inspiring individual for its honorary doctorate, which will be conferred at Spring Convocation in 2018.

Honorary degrees are intended to honour individuals whose extraordinary achievement in community, national or international service, intellectual or artistic achievements or significant service to society set a standard of excellence and merit the institution’s highest honour. The individual’s accomplishments are of such excellence that they provide, through example, inspiration and leadership to the graduates of the university. In accepting an honorary degree the recipient also honours the spirit of the university.

Candidates must normally have an exceptional record of distinction in at least one of the following:

  1. Scholarship
  2. Research
  3. Teaching
  4. The Arts
  5. Public Service
  6. Business
  7. Athletics
  8. Health Services
  9. National or international leadership
  10. Professional and/or voluntary service in the community at large
  11. Professional and/or voluntary service to the Church

NOMINATION PROCESS

Applications will be reviewed by the Governance Committee of the Board of Governors (the Committee), and their selection is recommended to the Board of Governors for approval.

Nominations are not awarded posthumously and generally not to any of the following: current faculty or staff; current members of the Board of Governors; and current holders of political office.

In approving candidates for honorary degrees, the Committee strives for diversity of backgrounds, disciplines and spheres of contribution. The Committee seeks those whose merit is extraordinary and not merely impressive.

Please submit the following documentation for each nomination:

  • Nomination letter including detailed specification and documentation of the candidate’s distinctions and achievements
  • Name and contact information of the candidate
  • Up-to-date curriculum vitae
  • Two letters of support for the candidate

Normally, the recipient of the Honorary Doctorate will be the Convocation Speaker at the May Convocation Ceremony.
