Mind and Criminal Responsibility: A Short History from Aristotle to our modern Canadian Criminal Code
This talk will briefly review Greek, Roman, Jewish and Christian concepts of moral responsibility. Then the evolution of criminal responsibility in England will be reviewed through cases, culminating with a discussion of the McNaughten Rule. We will end with a discussion of our modern Canadian Criminal Code, and its evolution from both ancient concepts and the English development of law of criminal responsibility. If time allows, we will discuss some significant variants to English law which have been tried in the United States
Dr. William C. Friend is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta
