First Machine Learning Innovation + symposium was a success!

The CUE Innovation Hub hosted the ML innovation symposium as part of the AIPP showcase on Nov 30, 2022. The showcase was a celebration of the Artificial Intelligence Pathways Partnership – a collaboration between CUE, Norquest College, Athabasca University and Bow Valley College, established in 2019 and co-funded by PrariesCan.

CUE students presented their innovative artificial intelligence-based projects to a panel of expert judges from the Edmonton AI community, made connections with industry, obtained feedback from experienced AI experts and won some cool prizes!

The participants (and winners) were:

  • Ali Boukrich: Smart Waste App: Winner of the Most Creative AI Solution (MSc IT, co-supervised by Dr. Nasim Hajari and CAAI)
  • DS Mabrur Hyder: Smart lighting project; Winner of the Most Advanced AI Solution  (BSc IT)
  • Raghav Thakkar: Intelligent Energy Calculator; Winner of the Most Interactive Presenter title (MSc IT, smart energy calculator, McNeil CARE and CAAI)
  • Nabil Beshay: A Deep Learning Based Multilingual Hate Speech Detection for Resource Scarce Languages (MSc IT, supervised by Dr. Baidya Saha)
  • Tatva Joshi: Detect COVID-induced pneumonia using chest X-ray (BSc IT, supervised by Dr. Baidya Saha)
  • Kathan Trivedi: Weapon classification using bounding box regression classification (BSc IT, supervised by Dr. Baidya Saha)

All the winners will receive a $500 tuition fee credit, $100 gift cards from Bookish and CUE swag (funded by AIPP). All participants will continue to receive mentorship and infrastructure support from the CUE Innovation Hub.
