A Feast for the Senses: A Taste of Beijing Opera Comes to Concordia

Posted on: Dec 2, 2019

Concordia’s Office of Extension and Culture invites all to enjoy a visual and aural feast this Monday evening, Dec. 2! The Edmonton Beijing Opera Association presents the Mei Lanfang of Peking Opera Troupe from Beijing, touring in North America through December.

The group hosts an hour-long presentation in Concordia’s Al and Trish Huehn Theater December 2nd, 5 to 6 pm. A rare opportunity to observe a professional Beijing Opera group and hear more about the uniqueness of their art!

Beijing (or Peking) Opera arose in the late 18th century and became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century. It has become one of the cultural treasures of China, capturing the cultural essence of the country. Beijing Opera contains multifaceted theatrical elements that combine the treasures of the oriental arts: drama, dancing, martial arts and acrobatics. In 2010 Beijing Opera was declared an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO.

The event is open to all and free of charge (though donations will be accepted toward the Concordia Concert Choir’s spring tour to China).
