Women’s Soccer Come Thundering Out of the Gate in Home Openers

The Thunder Women’s Soccer team had a strong start to the season, coming out of the opening weekend with a record of 2-0. In the home opener against the King's Eagles, the Thunder sent a message early when Nicole Klepic struck a ball from 25 yards out that found the top corner of the goal. Early in the second half, a King's defender went down with an injury that delayed the game for 35 minutes. The Thunder showed their focus and determination as Jaida Stasiuk found the back of the net just minutes after the game was back underway. Thanks to Maggie Boras clearing a ball off the goal line late in the game, rookie Goalkeeper Selina Verkland was able to maintain her first shutout and the Thunder won the game 2-Nil.
Sunday’s match against the Grande Prairie Wolves proved to be a different test for the Thunder as the Wolves scored first in the 20th minute. Brynn deVries took a free kick five minutes later and Jill Sanders got on the end of it to score the equalizer. In subsequent minutes, it quickly became the Shyanne Walton show, as she scored a natural hat trick and proved to be a strong physical presence on the pitch. As the final whistle blew, it marked a 4-1 score for the game and the completion of a solid opening weekend for the Thunder women.
Next up for the Thunder is their biggest road trip of the year, taking them up to Ft. McMurray to take on the Keyano Huskies in a two-match set on Saturday and Sunday (19th and 20th). Game times will be at 2 and 12 PM, respectively.
