Thunder Women’s Volleyball Fall to Vikings

Posted on: Jan 11, 2016

The Women's Volleyball team opened the second half of play in a home and home series versus the Augustana Vikings from Camrose. Hosting the Vikings Friday, the ladies came out strong and controlled the first contact and won the first set 25-20. In the second set, the team was up 23-17 and looking to close out the set but the Vikings never gave up and rallied back to take the set 25-23. After that the Thunder were unable to get any rhythm going and lost the next two sets 25-15 and 25-17. Shandelle Meyer was chosen the Player of the Match for the Thunder.
In Saturday's match in Camrose, the team once again came out strong and played some exciting volleyball in the first set but were unable to close out the set and lost on extra points 29-31. In the next two sets, the ladies battled hard for the majority of the play but could not take advantage of some easy transition balls and lost 19-25 and 20-25. Julia Heupel was the Player of the Match for the Thunder.
Coach Turner had this to say about the opening weekend of winter semester play: "We came out in the first match and really played well and controlled the first contact which helped us establish our middle and open up our outside hitters. By doing that it made the Vikings struggle to key on one player. After the second set loss, we stopped doing the little things well and in turn we gave up some easy points and were unable to get back on track to succeed. In Saturday's match we played better but again we had some mental lapses in each set at key times and at this level those will cost you a set or match and that is why we lost. Overall we are taking great strides to get better but we need to widen the gap in the errors that we make, so we will continue to talk and work on that in practice."
The Thunder will next face the Lakeland Rustlers with the home game going at 6 PM on Friday, January 15th.
