Thunder Men’s Volleyball Open Regular Season

Posted on: Oct 28, 2013

The Thunder Men's Volleyball team opened up the ACAC regular season this past weekend with a pair of matches against the Lakeland Rustlers. In the first match at home on Friday evening, the Thunder had a very competitive outing, sticking close to the Rustlers and taking the second set before falling back on their heels and losing the 3rd and 4th sets (25-18, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-14.  Connor Reeves has an impressive opening night recording 13 kills, 2 blocks and 4 digs.  Rookie Nick Dove also had a good night with 11 kills and 6 digs while second year vet Kyle Sabraw notched 4 kills, 4 blocks and 10 digs. In the return engagement at Lakeland on Saturday, the Thunder came out strong and just missed taking the first set before the experience and pluck of the Rustlers kicked in and forced the match into a straight set loss for the Thunder (25-22, 25-20 and 25-17).  Once again, second year Middle Connor Reeves recorded 8 kills while rookie Right Side Adam Baker contributed 6 kills and 2 digs.  Nick Dove also had his second impressive outing of the weekend with a 5 kill, 5 dig performance. Head Coach and Thunder Athletics ADA Joel Mrak yielded the coaching reins to Assistant Shamus Dowler for the opening weekend as Concordia hosted the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships.  However, Coach Mrak had this to say about the season opening series: "It was a disappointing start to our regular season for sure. On Friday night after we settled down and won the 2nd set, we were cruising in the 3rd until we stopped playing when being up 19-16 and let Lakeland come back. The 4th set was a struggle for sure and our guys were rattled pretty good. We expected a better showing on Saturday but felt like there was still some remnants of Friday night's loss still in our system. At the end of the day, the guys need to step up and handle the adversity better. We have high expectations for each of these guys in practice and in competition and expect that they will be working on doing the little things better to push this team forward."
The Thunder's next match up will be against the Vikings of Augustana with the home game on Halloween night at the Ralph King Athletic Centre.
