Thunder Curling Secure ACAC Championship Berth at Winter Regional

Posted on: Feb 1, 2016

This past weekend, Concordia welcomed ACAC Curling to the Winter Regional tournament, hosting a total of 51 round robin games and 1 tie breaker. The Thunder Mixed (Co-ed) team posted a 3-2 record with wins over Lakeland, RDC and Portage, losing only to NAIT and Olds. Their record – combined with the results from the Fall Regional – put the Thunder in a three-way tie for 2nd place in ACAC Championship qualifying.  A tie-breaking 'skill competition' event was needed to break the log jam and saw the Thunder slotted to 3rd spot in the official ranking. Skip Adrienne Maschmeyer led her team to qualify for the ACAC Championships with a 6-4 record overall for the regular season. The team made the crowds gather behind their sheets on multiple shots of extreme difficulty or high risk. The team played really well with a few unfortunate great shots by opposition teams resulting in the losses. "I'm excited to see this team come together," enthused first-year Head Coach Travis Jones. "We started the season practices late and having a new coach so late in the season, it was a great feeling being behind the glass with watching these amazing athletes qualify for provincials. Adrienne (Skip) and Jason (Vice Skip) have been an amazing duo in their collaboration, determination and team spirit leading the team."
The Thunder will have almost a full month to prepare for the Championships which will be hosted by Portage College on February 27th and 28th.  Go Thunder!
