Thunder Badminton Kick Off Season with a Strong Showing at Kings
Posted on: Jan 25, 2016The 2015-16 Concordia Thunder Badminton got the ACAC regular season off to a great start this past weekend. Overall as a team, they finished in 2nd place behind the NAIT Ooks, this in spite of the fact that the Thunder were without veterans Connor Reinson and Rachael Smillie who will play a big part in future tournaments for the Thunder. There were a number of great individual results from the weekend as well.
First year player Takeisha Wang from Old Scona High School started off her ACAC career on a great note by going a perfect 4-0 in Women Singles play. She cruised through the competition, defeating 4 NAIT players in a row to capture the win. The final was a very close 3 game battle that Takeisha won over Kai-Li Huang from NAIT 18-21, 22-20 and 21-15. Fourth year player Lindsay Ross went 2-1 in Women's Singles but lost out in the quarterfinals. On the men's side, 1st year player Calvin Siu went 4-1 and won the C – event. In Women's Doubles action Takeisha Wang and Lindsay Ross fell a little short in the quarter finals. In Mixed Doubles action Takeisha Wang and Calvin Siu won the B-event going 4-1 for the tourney and Alysha Dyck and Kirk Sundt also pulled off two big wins for the Thunder in the Mixed Doubles event.
Coaches MacAlpine, Wong and Johnson were all proud of the entire team this past weekend but also know that there is still lots of room to improve. The Thunder have next weekend off but will head to Olds College on Feb 6/7 for the 2nd ACAC tournament of the season.
