Romantic Verve

Sunday November 3, 2013 – 2 p.m. in the Robert Tegler Student Centre

The Concordia Symphony Orchestra (CSO) opens the 2013-2014 season with Romantic Verve, a concert featuring masterpieces from the romantic era. Anton Bruckner’s mighty Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major begins this concert with its continuous flow of emotional intensity. Symphony No. 4 is known in multiple versions, as Bruckner very often worked incessantly revising his compositions. The CSO will present the second version completed in 1880, which includes major retouching of the original score written in 1874. Highlights of this version include a new Scherzo and Trio and the popular Volksfest Finale.

This program of romantic music also features Peter Maxwell-Davies’ Orkney Wedding with Sunrise, for bagpipe solo and orchestra. In this piece, the composer portrays irreverent scenes of a countryside bash. The featured soloist, piper John Stewart, has competed and performed all across North America and Europe, including the North American Bagpipe Championships in Maxville, Ontario; the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Royal Windsor Tattoo at Windsor Castle, where he and his band were guests of Queen Elizabeth II.

Tickets are $15 for Adults and $12 for Students and Seniors and are available at Tix on the Square (tixonthesquare.ca or 780.420.1757), Concordia Student Accounts or at the door. Special Family Admission: $40 (available at the door only).
