Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship (GSS)

The Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarships support academically superior graduate students who are receiving training and conducting research in areas that are strategically important to Alberta’s economy.  In addition to the information provided below, students must also review the Alberta Innovates’ Program Guidelines and Handbook for detailed requirements on applying for, holding, and renewing awards.  Learn more about the emerging technology areas.

 

Value and Duration

Masters – up to $26,000 per year up to two years.

 

Eligibility and requirements

  • Areas of study and research must fall into the categories funded by Alberta Innovates:

Information and Communications Technologies (ICT):

    • ICT – Communications Networks and Services
    • ICT – Internet of Things/Machine-to-Machine Systems
    • ICT – Advanced Data Management and Analytics, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
    • ICT – Cybersecurity
    • ICT – Human Interaction with Digital Media
    • ICT – Quantum Computing, Devices and Processors

Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMM)

    • AMM – Automation (including Robotics)
    • AMM – Lightweight Materials and Technologies
    • AMM – Additive Manufacturing
    • AMM – Nanotechnology
    • AMM – Quantum Materials

  • There are no citizenship restrictions on this award.
  • Each candidate must be sponsored by a faculty supervisor, possessing both a record of productive research within an Alberta Innovates-funded research area (ICT and AMM) and sufficient resources to ensure the satisfactory conduct of the research.
  • Students cannot simultaneously hold support from more than one Alberta Innovates studentship program.
  • Scholarship terms vary from one to four years, depending on the circumstances of the applicant.
  • Students who have been awarded an Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship must complete annual and final reports through the term of their award and post-award reports after the end of the award.
  • Multi-year scholarships are renewed annually after the first year upon satisfactory reporting by the student.
  • For those not yet registered in a graduate program at Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE), your eligibility to apply for the Alberta Innovates GSS is contingent upon meeting all eligibility requirements for admission to a CUE graduate program.

 

Application Procedures

A complete application includes:

  1. CUE’s AB Innovates (GSS) Application – 2023-2024 – FILLABLE – for questions related to the content of each section, applicants are encouraged to seek advice from their supervisor or department.
  2. Up-to-date transcripts of the applicant’s complete academic record.  Include all post-secondary institutions you have attended along with a Concordia University of Edmonton transcript showing courses currently in progress (IP).
  3. Two letters of reference.  Please ensure that the letter is typewritten on letterhead, signed and includes contact information.  Letters of reference may be submitted in one of two ways:

a. In person (HA 120) – reference letters submitted in person must be in a sealed envelope with the name of the referee written across the sealed flap.

b. Email to finaid@concordia.ab.ca – reference letters must be emailed directly from the referee’s email account and be sent as a PDF attachment.

 

Adjudication Procedures

Concordia University of Edmonton Review Procedure

The Financial Aid and Awards Office will review all applications for eligibility and completeness and forward them to a Scholarship and Awards sub-committee for adjudication.  The committee will evaluate the applicants based on excellence and strategic alignment in Emerging Technology Areas of scientific research which are strategically important to Alberta.

Alberta Innovates Evaluation Process

Alberta Innovates will then review applications forwarded by the university for alignment with Government of Alberta, Alberta Innovates, and Post-Secondary Investments and Emerging Technologies (PSIET) priorities.    The applicant must clearly articulate in the application how the results of the research can produce potential environmental, health, economic, social and other impacts for Alberta.

Alberta Innovates retains the sole right to determine the evaluation process and does not disclose the names of its external reviewers to ensure their objectivity and impartiality.  All external parties are subject to both confidentiality and conflict of interest policies set by Alberta Innovates.

Deadline

The 2023-2024 competition deadline is October 20, 2023.  All applications and supporting documentation must be submitted to the Financial Aid and Awards Office by 4:30 p.m which is the time the office closes.  Late applications will not be accepted.
