Records fall in Calgary for Thunder Indoor Track Team

Posted on: Feb 2, 2015

The Thunder Men's and Women's Indoor Track teams rolled into Calgary on Sunday and ran some fast times despite an early start to the day and a slow track at the U of C. The Men's 300m was up first and Men's team Co-captain Ben Thomas led the way, running his 2nd fastest time ever in the event to finish in top spot out of the ACAC competitors.  Just behind Thomas was SAIT transfer Kenton Sportak who finished in 4th place overall, becoming the 3rd fastest Thunder man over that distance.  Two spots behind him was the other Men's team Co-captain Kevin Chambers, throwing down the 4th fastest time ever by a Thunder male.  Not to be outdone, the two Thunder Ladies competing ran the two fastest times ever in the 300m with Kristina Dong setting a new school record followed closely by Badminton superstar Rachael Smillie.  The girls finished in 9th and 10th place, respectively.
After a short break, it was time for the 3k runners to show their stuff and see if they could break some records.  U of A transfer Kirk Sundt ran a smart race to finish in 2nd spot and set a new school record over that distance.  Rookie Michael Quick managed to run the 4th fastest time ever by a Thunder male, finishing in 5th spot overall.  Then it was over to the Thunder Women's team runners over the same distance and not to be outdone, Shelby Edgar ran a 40 second personal best to become the 2nd fastest Concordia Women over that distance, behind only Captain Marriya Jenkins and ended up 2nd overall out of ACAC runners.  Ana Zulic became the 5th fastest Thunder Women ever over the same distance, finishing in 9th place overall.
The 600m distance was only challenged by the Men's Co-captains and again it was Ben Thomas leading the way, this time setting a new school record over the distance, finishing in 2nd place overall.  Not far behind was Kevin Chambers, finishing in 3rd overall and running the 2nd fastest time ever by a Thunder man. The Thunder Men's favourite distance, the 4x400m relay was the final event of the day and the boys saved enough energy to absolutely crush all competitors in the event by over 100m.  The team of Thomas, Sundt, Chambers and Sportak ran the 4th fastest time ever by a Men's team.  The ladies ran a solid race to cross the line as the 3rd place Ladies team and ended up running the 3rd fastest time ever by a Ladies 4x400m, less than a second off the school record.  The Men's team finished 1st overall, beating out Lethbridge, SAIT, Red Deer, MacEwan and Augustana.  The Ladies team were 5th overall for the day behind Lethbridge, MacEwan, SAIT and Red Deer.
Next up for the Thunder Indoor teams will be the Nike Challenge on Saturday at the U of A Butterdome from 2-5pm.  "I can't wait to see a few more records fall next weekend on the fast U of A track," said Head Coach Matt Norminton.
